Welcome

‘the struggle of people against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting’

– Milan Kundera

Macquarie University is not known as one of the radical campuses in Australia but it has a very radical history that has all but been forgotten. The purpose of this blog is to try and reconstruct that history and publish it in a popular format.

The history is divided into various sections. These include:

about

introduction

founding of Macquarie University

first stirrings of student activism

the Vietnam moratorium campaign at Macquarie

Macquarie uni radicalises

Gay Liberation at Macquarie

Feel free to check out the various sections in what order you may like, they do however run roughly in chronological order.

This is only a taste of the radical history of Macquarie University, as time goes by I will be updated it with sections on ‘occupations and mass meetings in 1974’, ‘the Macquarie University Labor Club’, ‘Arena’, ‘solidarity campaigns with Palestine and South Africa’, ‘Women’s Liberation at Macquarie’, ‘revival in the 90’s’, ‘campaign against Victor Ma and corruption’, ‘Macquarie University today’ and much more.

As well as extra history sections I am trying to get a picture gallery together (if you happen to have any relevant pictures please email: jorhumphreys@gmail.com).

So please have a look around but don’t forget to come back again and check out the site for more content!

  1. My sister Diana Auburn was editor of Arena around 1975 I think … not sure of the exact date, but she was editor for a year or more … I can’t get exact details because she died many years ago. I have a great photo of her campaign poster on a hoarding at Macquarie, including the posters of other campaigners. I can send it to you if you like…

  2. Hi Jordan, sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I’m emailing the photo now … yes those were the good old days at Macquarie … now it’s all accounting and business degrees (yawn) …
